afjdlsk DS9

HERE ARE SOME THINGS I WILL WORK ON ONCE I AM FINISHED WATCHING THIS EPISODE:
Icons (eight more to go for this week's icontests, plus the ones from the meme)
RukiRen fic (yeah, I don't know why I'm doing it either) for 31_days
InoSaku fic for naruto_yurithon

I have many other things I need to get done, RL stuff being not the least among them (ugh), but those are top on my list at the moment.

THINGS ABOUT THIS EPISODE THAT ARE REALLY PRETTY WRONG:
Okay, so it's "Covenant" (07x09). It has Kira badass, which is always good, but oh god how wrong is it that I am finding Dukat creepily hot? Not in looks or anything so much as in the power of his freaky evil derangement and his seriously wrong UST with Kira. THIS IS REALLY REALLY WRONG GUYS. aaaugh. It doesn't help that I've been kind of a little in love with him ever since "Waltz."

I'm also kind of in love with the parallels between him and Garak. No, no, hear me out.

Dukat is, in essence, a man who has done horrible things in the service of his people.

So is Garak.

Now granted, there's a difference of magnitude--Garak is a spy and Dukat is a dictator--but it still comes down to that same thing. (Also, let's not forget that during "Broken Link" [04x26] Garak was quite willing to commit genocide to defend his people.) The difference is in their motivations and their perceptions of themselves.

Dukat may have been motivated at first by genuine sparkly-eyed devotion to Cardassia, but he let himself be overcome by ambition and powerlust. Garak has remained firm in his devotion to his people even when cast out from them.

But I find that the more interesting difference comes in how they see themselves. Dukat is not only deluded, but he has a desperate, almost pathetic craving to remain that way, to see himself as one of the good guys, to have others praise and love him for being so, to justify everything he's done. Garak, on the other hand, coolly acknowledges that he is Not A Good Man and even tries to push Ziyal away from him for her own good. He has no desire to be one of the good guys--he just wants to get his job done.

I don't know where I was going with all this. I just love bad guys with depth. But not as much as I love spies. ♥ I need to make my "tinkertailorsoldierspy" Garak icon.
