Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?

Another two-for-one deal.

Oh, comic books! You are so good at giving your characters emotional baggage. Usually, though, when it's girls, that baggage either gets ignored or used to fuel a boy's arc instead. Not so with Zoe and Violet of the Legion of Super-Heroes! They have between them all sorts of awkwardness and it's all about them. Zoe's disappearance and Violet's search for her, Leviathan's death, the Emerald Eye, Zoe going zombie (not literally, as I must specify because it is a comic book) on everyone, all of that feeds into these two and their relationship. That's on top of the issues they already had: Violet's lack of confidence and self-esteem, alternately soothed by her friendship with Zoe and magnified by her early jealousy of Zoe, and Zoe's hunger for power and fear of that desire in herself.

By the time my mental timeline of the post-Zero Hour Legionnaires ends, they're totally a couple. But they haven't forgotten the big awkward mess they've been through. They're just more supportive of each other because of it.

This one's kind of a gimme for this question. Shizuru and Natsuki start out with more than a little baggage: Natsuki is an ice princess shutting other people out of her life due to her quest for revenge for her mother's death, and Shizuru is madly in love with her while absolutely desperate to keep it a secret from her. Even then, there's a whole net of complicated angst between them that neither of them quite realizes. There are implications that Natsuki has a subconscious romantic interest in Shizuru that she's suppressing because she isn't allowed to have those kinds of feelings, but Shizuru would never believe that anyway because Natsuki is too perfect to have such terrible, sinful feelings--oh yeah, did I mention Shizuru is kind of full of internalized homophobia? That helps load them up, too! And then Natsuki gets broken and it's Shizuru who comes to her rescue (fanon holds that other stuff happened here that makes this a horrible pairing that proves all its shippers are rape apologists, but for various reasons from characterization to animation cues, I don't follow that fanon). Only for her secret to be revealed, and crazy times happen where Shizuru totally loses it and goes on a killing spree in an unhinged attempt to win Natsuki's heart. Then they kill each other, and as they're about to fade away Shizuru is happy, because Natsuki said she loves her.

Then they come back, because it was their destiny to die and My-HiME is all about giving the finger to destiny. And now instead of just fading away on a kiss, they have to actually deal with all the shit they've been through with each other. Ouch. They totally hook up at the end, mind you, but there's no way it's easy.

Day 09 - The most believable relationship?

Yes. I am going to a Gundam series for the most believable relationship. Take that, logic.

But Mwu la Fllaga and Murrue Ramius are different than your average drama-strewn Gundam pairing. As much as I love all the pairings in Gundam SEED, most of them require various plot devices to get together. Pairings in general usually do, and I am okay with this, as I often love those plot devices. But Mwu and Murrue never do. They just work together during a time of stress and danger, and as they get to know each other they become attracted to each other, and somewhere along the way they realize they've fallen in love. So Mwu ditches his orders and goes back to be with Murrue, and Murrue is all, sigh, pilots, and they deal with the consequences and stay with each other from then on.

Then there is a heroic sacrifice, which I loved to pieces, and then there is Murrue crying and then moving on with her life. Then there's Destiny. Fact: I do not refuse to watch Destiny because of the pairings wank. I refuse to watch Destiny because I know I would fly into a rage every time I saw Neo on screen, and it's just not worth hurting myself like that. So I pretend Mwu and Murrue's story ended with SEED, because while happy endings are nice, solid character arcs are better.
