Around the time I started this meme, I read The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay in rapid succession. They're not the best books ever written, but they sure hit my buttons.
Katniss and Peeta hit my buttons, too, including some very specific ones. They have a touching childhood encounter, then a long stretch of time during which they don't really know each other, then a dramatic reunion under strange circumstances. Ping! They have an awkward connection that isn't entirely romantic but isn't completely unromantic either. Ping! And that's just in the first book, where I was already shipping them like, well, burning (in fact, I was pretty much shipping them from the moment Katniss related the flashback about the bread). In the second book, the relationship gets all kinds of messed-up with the two of them being forced into it but at the same time finding comfort in each other. And yet they still love each other, even if Katniss doesn't quite know how to admit it to herself. Then there's the third book. The thing that broke me most about the third book (although there was a lot that broke me about the third book) was the possibility that Peeta had lost his love of Katniss. I was so glad when he managed to regain it--and the fight to do so just made the pairing better.
So they can be really sweet, and also incredibly messed-up. Score. On top of that, I really like both characters. Katniss is a multilayered concoction of charm, vulnerability, toughness, and anger. Peeta is all goodness and light wrapped up with a devious streak, and then he gets broken. In a way, the books are at heart about their relationship--not necessarily in a literal manner, since in that sense they're really about Katniss's journey through trauma and war, but in the sense that Katniss represents war and Peeta represents rebirth.
